Without a doubt, the great majority of people who first pick up a barbell or dumbbell do so with the intention of building greater muscle mass. And while inducing maximum hypertrophy is dictated for the most part by the intensity and effectiveness of one’s workouts, as well as the quality and consistency of one’s diet, proper supplementation will also have a major impact on results.
Two of the absolute best supplements available for both supporting the maintenance of muscle tissue while in a caloric deficit AND increasing lean body mass when in a gaining phase are EAAs (essential amino acids) and WPI (whey protein isolate).
Quite obviously, EAA supplements are those that contain all of the essential amino acids (of which there are nine). They are are called “essential” simply because they cannot be made in the human body, and thus must be supplied via the diet. EAAs are of paramount importance when it comes to the repair and growth of muscle tissue. You cannot increase lean body mass with an insufficient supply of amino acids any more than you could build a skyscraper without ample steel and concrete.
However, while you may be thinking that all you need to do to (maximally) ignite hypertrophy is consume adequate levels of protein, studies have shown that there is a bit more to the equation. By ingesting 10-20 grams of EAAs just prior to, and all throughout your workout, you have the opportunity to drive them directly into muscle cells at a highly accelerated rate. This occurs because of the massive increase in blood flow (aka, “the pump”) that takes place when engaged in resistance training. By literally “force feeding” EAAs into muscle cells when they are hyper-sensitive and in great need of raw materials, you will effectively bring about a huge uptick in MPS (muscle protein synthesis), which swings the internal pendulum greatly in favor of bringing about increases in lean body mass.
Whey protein isolate (WPI) is the purest form of whey available. It goes through a rigorous manufacturing process that removes almost all of the carbohydrates and fats, yielding primarily protein of the highest biological value.
Aside from its superior quality, BV, and purity, WPI has some other properties that make it such an effective muscle builder. First, it is very high in the branched chain amino acids (BCAAs), especially L-leucine, which is largely responsible for switching on the mTOR pathway – a major mechanism for signaling the body to add muscle tissue. In addition, WPI is digested and absorbed extremely rapidly, causing an almost immediate spike in circulating amino acids. Much evidence points to the fact that a rapid rise of amino acids into the bloodstream influences muscle protein synthesis – and this is especially true during the post workout “anabolic window,” when cells are extremely sensitive to insulin and nutrient transport.
- About 30 minutes before your workout consume approximately 10 grams of EAAs in water.
- All throughout your workout slowly sip on approximately 10 grams of EAAs in water.
- With 30 minutes after completing your workout consume 25-50 grams of WPI in water along with 50-100 grams of carbohydrates.
